Visualizing the drought in the United States

New England is experiencing one of its worst droughts since the government began tracking drought intensity levels in 2000.

Though Connecticut reached severe levels in September, Maine, Massachusetts and New Hampshire have been experiencing extreme levels since August.

Farmers are suffering as crops like apples are affected. Private wells are drying up.

A drought also could mean more active bears and leaves turning early on stressed trees.

Residents curious about what the future might be like if the trend continues should turn their eyes to California, which is in its fifth year of drought.
