Airlines are on course to raise more money in baggage fees this year than they did last year; that would be a fourth straight year of increased revenue from the fees.

In the first three quarters of 2016, airlines raised $3.15 billion in baggage fees, up from $2.85 billion over the same period in 2015, according to data from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics.

Throughout all 12 months of 2015, airlines raised $3.8 billion, an increase of 819 percent since 2007, the earliest year for which data are available, when baggage fees totaled $424 million.

American Airlines and U.S. Airways, which began reporting combined data in 2015, raised the most in baggage fees — $1.13 billion — followed by Delta, which raised $875 million.
