Low-income renters haven’t benefited from free weatherization programs

Every month on your electric or gas bill, you will notice a surcharge called the ‘Combined Public Benefits Charge.’ A part of this surcharge pays for programs to encourage and subsidize weatherizing homes around the state. But, according to the most recent data, not everyone who needs these services takes advantage of them.

Commentary: Why mapping ‘opportunity’ matters

By tracking data on neighborhood resources and visualizing them into maps, we can see that our intuitions translate into very real neighborhoods distinctions. These maps don’t capture every nuance of a neighborhood but, at a macro level, you can see how patterns in access to opportunity differ between groups. This allows us to drill down into the place/outcome nexus to better develop policy solutions.
